We research for the benefit of the world's animals
Research is an important part of our work. The scientific staff at Aalborg Zoo are engaged in research that benefits both the animals in the zoo and the wild populations. Research is conducted in areas such as behavioural biology, population biology and veterinary tasks. The research is conducted in close collaboration with Aalborg University, AAU.
Aalborg Zoo supports student research projects through the Aalborg Zoo Conservation Foundation - AZCF.
Every time animals are stunned for health checks, transport or other purposes, we collect material for the EAZA biobank (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums). This material is used to detect possible diseases in breeding programmes and other relevant research projects.
Samples and organs also contribute to current research projects at universities around the world, increasing the understanding of physiological relationships and thus the conservation of species.
We participate in EAZA studies and projects focusing on feeding, enclosure, enrichment and facility design, helping to ensure continuous improvement in the daily management of animals in zoos.
