Beach toad reintroduction
In collaboration with Aalborg Municipality, Aalborg Zoo is starting a reintroduction project for beach toads in North Jutland.
There are 14 amphibian species in Denmark, all of which are protected and one of them is the common toad. Since 1975 and up until 2012, the Danish population has had a decline of approximately 40 %. This has happened for a variety of reasons: habitat changes, climate change and high predation pressure. Many predators eat the tadpoles of the oystercatcher, which is one of the reasons why only about 2 % of the tadpoles undergo the complete transformation to adult oystercatcher.
The plan is that breeding pairs of common toads will be brought in with an exemption from the Ministry of Green Trepart to Aalborg Zoo, where they will breed in our facilities.
When the fry have reached the desired size, they are released in selected areas of Aalborg Municipality. This will take place continuously over a number of years and contribute to the preservation of the North Jutland toad population.
This work will continue over a longer period of time with the aim of securing and strengthening the beach toad population in North Jutland.
