Northern Yellow-cheeked Crested Gibbons

In 2018, Aalborg Zoo, along with more than 20 other zoos in Europe, decided to support the Frankfurt Zoological Society and Stiftung Artenschutz's project in the conservation of the Nomascus gibbon (Nomascus annamensis) in Kon Ka Kinh National Park in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The national park covers over 42,000 hectares, where the project contributes to patrolling the area to reduce the amount of poaching. The Nomascus gibbon is poached primarily for its meat, which is commonly eaten in the areas where it lives.

Until 2013, the species was not recognised as a separate species, but a subspecies. This means that knowledge about this specific species is limited. Therefore, the funding also contributes to the monitoring of the species, the populations and the collection of biological material that can be used in research.

The project involves the local population through education and communication about the essential role of the rainforest and nature in general. In addition, the population is also involved in the monitoring of the species.

Aalborg Zoo supports annually with 1000 Euro.
