Experiences in North Jutland

Aalborg Zoo is not just for the little ones, there are experiences for young and old alike. Read our guide to the experiences you can enjoy together.

Experiences in beautiful North Jutland

North Jutland offers plenty of experiences. There's the town and city life for those who love markets and cafés. And then there's the distinctive, wild nature that North Jutland is so well known for, which leaves a very special impression; the many sandbanks in the dune landscape, the barren moorland or the impressive fjord landscape. And if you want to experience animals up close - without wearing hiking boots and with access to hot coffee just around the corner - North Jutland also offers that opportunity at Aalborg Zoo. Here there are great experiences to be had for the whole family. Meet the always fascinating tigers, lions and giraffes or very special animal species such as anteaters, armadillos and capybaras for perhaps the first time.

At Aalborg Zoo, nature conservation is important, and the love of nature shines through. Both the nature that surrounds us and provides so many experiences in North Jutland. And also the nature from which many of the animal species in the zoo originate.

Discover animals from around the world locally in North Jutland

It's quite wonderful to experience so many exotic animals - right here in North Jutland. In a short time you'll meet a Californian sea lion, an African wild dog, a Colombian spider monkey and an Asian lion. Don't tell me North Jutland isn't an international hotspot.

There is a lot to experience for the animal lover. For example, the playful polar bears that swim around in their lifelike enclosure. You can see them both swimming around deep in the water and wandering around on the ground. It's fascinating to experience such large animals up close.

You can also explore the lemurs and experience the quirky animals' behaviour as you walk through their enclosure. And see if you can spot the little workers that live and work hard in the lemurs' inner enclosure. The soft bio-bottom is filled with, among other things, woodlice that decompose the lemurs' faeces and food scraps, so the climate in the enclosure is just right for the small, delicate monkeys.

Aalborg Zoo is close to the city centre, so a visit to the zoo can easily be combined with other experiences in North Jutland's largest city. Enjoy a bite to eat at one of the city's many restaurants, go on a cosy shopping trip, enjoy the beautiful waterfront or visit exciting museums. There are plenty of opportunities to get a taste of the city.

Eat, shop and meet the dinosaurs

Of course, there should also be room for a break between the many exciting experiences when you visit Aalborg Zoo. Re-energise with food and drink at the cosy eateries around the garden. The famous Aalborg pastry shop, Penny Lane, offers hot drinks and delicious breads and cakes, while the barbecue area offers cosy surroundings with benches and tables where you can enjoy food and drinks. You can even go the extra mile for lunch and have a barbecue if you feel like it.

Aalborg Zoo naturally has a shop where you can buy a souvenir from your visit to the zoo. Maybe the kids have fallen in love with a cute panda teddy bear that just has to go home? If you have a little dino lover with you, you can also buy small dinosaurs like the ones you can experience at North Jutland's perhaps most dangerous exhibition; Dinosaur Land.

Get up close and personal with 20 almost-living dinosaurs. They certainly look real, make sounds and are the same size as the real dinosaurs were. Maybe the family dino expert knows a Parasaurolophus or a Styracosaurus? These are just some of the ones you can experience in Dinosaur Land.

Research and communication contribute to a great experience

Love for nature and wildlife plays a big role at Aalborg Zoo. By collecting knowledge from the animals and passing it on to our guests, we can all learn more about the amazing wildlife that the zoo harbours. Aalborg Zoo is working to strengthen efforts to protect endangered species and collect knowledge for research that can help the work on this important issue. This also puts North Jutland on the international map, as our knowledge can help other zoos - and vice versa!

A very special experience in the garden is our events and speaks, where guests can learn much more about the animals and hear about how we actively participate in nature conservation projects - both locally and internationally.

Learn more about the UN Sustainable Development Goals

There are experiences for people of all ages at Aalborg Zoo. Our exhibition, The World Space, is based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable energy, responsible consumption and production, partnerships for action and life on land. Both young and old can learn from the exhibition - regardless of their previous knowledge of the SDGs. The exhibition is designed to appeal to the senses, and everyone can join in. Experience the blades of a 97 metre long wind turbine up close - the brave can even walk right into the blade itself.

In the exhibition, four selected SDGs are presented with ideas for small actions that can make a big difference and turn SDGs into everyday goals. With this exhibition, we hope to get people thinking and inspire our visitors to think about the SDGs in their everyday lives. It's also a great opportunity to talk to children about this important agenda and how we can take care of our world together.
