Why insects are important for nature - and for us

Insects are small, but they have a very big impact. They help flowers, plants and trees to be pollinated so that fruit, berries and vegetables can grow. Without insects, many of the plants we live on would not be able to grow.

Insects are also food for many other animals. Birds, fish, frogs and small mammals feed on them. If there are fewer insects, there will be less food for many animals, and the balance of nature can be disturbed.

At the same time, insects act as nature's little cleaners. They decompose dead plants and animals and help make the soil healthy so that new plants can grow.

Today, many insects are threatened because their habitats are disappearing and nature is changing. That's why it's important that we look after them. When we look after insects, we also look after nature - and our own future.
