Why is Aalborg Zoo a member?

As a modern zoo with a central role in communicating the complexity of nature and the need for biodiversity conservation, Aalborg Zoo has a responsibility to ensure that all aspects of our work rest on a solid professional and ethical foundation. Our membership of DAZA emphasises this responsibility and documents our commitment to the following core areas:

1. High animal welfare and ethical animal husbandry

DAZA membership requires Aalborg Zoo to adhere to the highest standards of animal welfare in terms of facilities, feeding, enrichment and medical treatment. This includes continuously developing and updating procedures based on the latest research and best practices in zoological management.

2. Conservation of endangered species

Aalborg Zoo actively participates in a wide range of International breeding programmes (EEP)which is coordinated through EAZA and supported by DAZA. The aim is to ensure genetically healthy populations of endangered species and - where possible - contribute to their reintroduction into the wild.

3. Dissemination and training

A key element of DAZA's work is to strengthen public knowledge about nature, biodiversity and climate change. Aalborg Zoo has a comprehensive dissemination programmewhich is aimed at children, young people and adults, and which is fully in line with DAZA's pedagogical objectives.

4. Research and knowledge sharing

Through our membership of DAZA, we participate in research collaborations and networks that contribute to a better understanding of animal behaviour, health, ecology and conservation. This knowledge is shared among DAZA members and is used to continuously improve animal welfare and the quality of communication.

5. Sustainability and environmental responsibility

DAZA membership commits to working actively with sustainable operations and reducing the ecological footprint. Aalborg Zoo has implemented a wide range of sustainability initiatives over the years, including energy savings, waste sorting, recycling and supporting projects that protect globally threatened ecosystems.

A seal of quality with international reach

The DAZA membership acts as a quality stamp, which confirms that Aalborg Zoo meets the strictest requirements and standards in modern zoological operations. It also provides access to a strong professional community and an international network where knowledge, experience and innovation are shared across borders.

Aalborg Zoo sees it as a core task to be a responsible player in the work to preserve the earth's biodiversity and engage the public in this endeavour. Membership of DAZA strengthens our ability to fulfil this task - in close collaboration with other zoological institutions in Denmark and around the world.
